A Social Network Geared Toward Building a National Motorcyclist Association
It was shortly after the open mic incident and during the MLK M5 campaign to raise funds for Dr. King's memorial in Washington, DC that I begin having conversations with Rev. Jesse L. Jackson about the prospect of working with the motorcycle community. Jackson declined the invitation to participate in the MLK M5 campaign preferring to "concentrate on the living."
The concept of Riders United to Serve Humanity came after the overwhelmingly successful launch of Ride for CHANGE Ride for HOPE we launched at Rev. Jesse L. Jackson's Rainbow PUSH. A couple of weeks later, the association with Jackson developed at his invitation to have lunch at Gipson's Steakhouse where we sat and had lunch for nearly two hours talking about Ride for CHANGE Ride for HOPE and World of Soul Motorcycle Community. From that meeting we went on to partner to increase the amount of college tours departing Chicago in route to Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
I grew up in the neighborhood of OPERATION PUSH now known as Rainbow Push. In fact, my elementary school was located directly across the street. So looking up at the signage seeing OPERATION PUSH (which means People United to Serve Humanity) was a daily occurrence. I took this photo during my first stop on arrival back in Chicago from producing Ride for CHANGE Ride for HOPE in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
It did not take a rocket scientist on my part to recognize supporting Chicago's youth with exposure to college campuses would be a great initiative to introduce to the motorcycle community. A diverse group of riders responded to the call to escort the tour buses from Rainbow PUSH out of Chicago. It was from that first encounter of support that the concept of Riders United to Serve Humanity was born.
I brought the idea back to members of World of Soul Motorcycle Community where we formed a braintrust to develop the idea.
What we came up with is as follows:
About Riders United to Serve Humanity https://www.causes.com/causes/387878-riders-united-to-serve-humanit...
To promote a positive image, dialogue and direct action from the motorcycle community toward achieving sustainable solutions to issues significant to our communities.
Riders United to Serve Humanity (R.U.S.H.) is a National Community Organization Initiative…a collection of motorcyclist, clubs and motorcycle-related charitable organizations and supporting action groups working to streamline the effectiveness of their community-oriented campaigns merging ideas and resources.
The ability to work together toward a common vision and direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives is the only membership criteria worthy of noting aside from owning a motorcycle responsibly. This criterion will be the fuel that will allow a few common people to attain uncommon results.
This initiative is in harmony with President Obama’s Organizing for America campaign in our journey to CHANGE America.
REFLECT and RESPECT the diversity of the worldwide motorcycle community
UNIFY the worldwide motorcycle community by encouraging participation in all matters significant to riders pertaining to health and safety, recreation and camaraderie, education and enlightenment
SERVE the worldwide motorcycle community by identifying and fostering powerful strategic relationships
HARNESS the worldwide motorcycle community by taking the lead role in having our voices heard and giving back locally, nationally and globally

Since the inception we have evolved into a more specific approach.
1. We have cut all political connotations as not to alienate fellow riders and potential supporters
2. Riders United to Serve Humanity is a structured independent body serving as infrastructure for World of Soul Motorcycle Community to accomplish its mission in local communities.
3. Local teams of Riders United to Serve Humanity consist of one person from each of the (12) different types of motorcycle clubs.
4. It's not about saving the world, but about how we can build capacity to better serve each other first.
5. Riders United to Serve Humanity retains its purpose to promote a positive image, dialogue and direct action from the motorcycle community toward achieving sustainable solutions to issues significant to our communities. Our aim is building a national motorcyclist association, producing events and supporting young people with their pursuit of a post-secondary education via Ride for CHANGE Ride for HOPE Foundation.
The current structure was presented during the World of Soul Motorcycle Community Conference series in 2013 and re-ratified in 2017.
