The Never-Ending Education Situation...

Last night I had an opportunity to sit in on a meeting regarding displaced teachers.

There is a national movement to privatize public schools. Because there is a negative climate about the image of teachers there is an urgent need to communicate the movement to end unions. With this situation, it makes one wonder where the hope is.

Quite frankly, the parents don’t understand the issues.

There has to be greater communication about the needs and expectations from both sides. This can be accomplished when teachers and the community are better organized on the issue of education.

Here in Chicago more African-American teachers are displaced than any other ethnic group.

In the midst of the turmoil the children are losing.

The teachers need to take a lesson out of the civil rights movement and create a broad-based coalition of supporters and get the community on their side to force the issue. The teachers do not appear to understand the effectiveness of mass movement on the education issue and the value of organizing the coalition. Maybe that is why they are in the position they are in and the kids continue to suffer. History will repeat itself here for better or worse.

Who is more important?  The teachers?  Or the Students?  I'm siding with the kids.

See this vid to show how the school system was positively transformed in Louisiana as a result of school choice.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsEP_5axdLI

Siding with the unions in THIS case, in my view may not in the best interest of the kids.

And while on the subject of education, I've gotten a lot of flack for my other belief that bilingual education for Latino kids should be banned.  English is my SECOND language.  I spoke Spanish only at home and ONLY ENGLISH at school (I grew up in Indiana in the 60's and was the only Spanish speaking kid in school.)  I'm not saying it's cool to punish kids that speak Spanish - I'm just saying teachers need to teach in English.

The sooner ALL kids (especially minorities) learn basic skills (reading, writing and arithmetic) the sooner they can flourish and we'll all be better off.
