Money, Great idea to post links to grant opportunities. I applied for and received a grant from Dollar General in the amount of $5,000.00 last year for our school library. If anyone is interested in applying, the link is below. Feel free to contact me if I can help with topic ideas, etc. The deadline for this year's grant opportunity is May 15, 2011.

Here's a hint: If the grant provider has the option of an 'online" application or mail-in application, use the mail-in application and pay the fifteen bucks for overnight delivery with signature confirmation. I overnighted the Dollar General grant application out the day before the deadline with signature confirmation and I truly believe that helped put my application at the top of the pile. Good luck and take care out there. Tom

I am an educator for Rescue Riders and Accident Scene Management. We teach riders what to do in emergency situations. Our level of education can be taught to a 5th grade level learner. We have several Junior rescue Riders as well with the youngest being 12. Its important to teach our youthe early about emergency response and the "right" way to contact EMS. Our children are being raised in a technical society with computers and cell phones. but educating them early, they too can raise awareness about motorcyles and safety and to STOP distracted drivers.

I hope that now that school is out for most of our children, parents, grandparents, neighbors, pastors, and any other concerned adults will encourage our children to go the Library and read over the summer. Parents should have your child read a book a week and do a book report. That will help them not loose all the hard work that teachers have tried to do during the school year. We can also take our children to the the musuems--and ask some other child along too. Seniors can offer children some odd jobs over the summer--let them wash your car, clean out your basement, mow your lawn. You can get a group of neighborhood kids and take them to the park for a game of PIGGY, softball or volleyball. Them treat them to an ice cream cone or cold pop. You can teach a child a new acitvity like gardening or how to change the oil on a car. We can help keep kids involved in safe and useful activites over the summer so they will be less likely to get in trouble.

As an educator, I often wonder why we are more often reactive than proactive when it comes to our children. Also, we often say that it takes a village to raise our youth, but due to societal changes our children are suffering inside of the villages. I appreciate all of the educators, and committed individuals who have heart, compassion, and appreciation for what it means to educate and mentor our students. Meeting students where they are in order to uplift them to an unimaginable level is the calling that we have as educators. Therefore, we must not only talk about it, we must unify and be about it.

I have been a teacher for 10 years in the urban core. It trully does take a village to raise a child. These children are coming to us with the best that they have and unfortunately it is not much. No matter how hard it is, we as educators cannot give up on them for in most cases we are their last hope.

Working with teenagers I can honestly say these kids are fragile. It's a different time and generation. The social pressures facing them are enormous. Many are not equipped to deal with the discipline and accountability issues facing them. I am extremely sympathetic to these kids. I enjoy watching them succeed. I guess that is why I always wanted to work with kids.
